class=\"content__inner\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As lockdown measures tighten once more, many organisations are considering a future where workers may never fully return to the office.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 crisis hit suddenly and with little warning. As a result, many<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;businesses made the transition to working from home suddenly, without remote working policies and little real guidance for their employees.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no doubt these hybrid home-office workplaces <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersmart.co.uk\/blog\/how-to-shift-to-working-from-home-permanently-without-compromising-your-cybersecurity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bring challenges<\/a> when it comes to privacy and security. But with such a rapid transition, do we understand exactly what those risks are?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The Research<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cybersmart.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CyberSmart<\/a> is looking for the answer. Starting this week, we\u2019ll be putting our expertise in SME cybersecurity to good use. We\u2019re joining a research group <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spritehub.org\/2020\/08\/20\/tips-in-blended-home-work-environments-a-socio-technical-perspective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examining the risks to trust, identity, privacy and security<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in new work environments as a result of COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three-month project is part of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spritehub.org\/?notification-cache-refresh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SPRITE+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a consortium funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The project was <a href=\"https:\/\/spritehub.org\/2020\/09\/16\/sprite-sandpit-projects-announced\/?notification-cache-refresh=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of several selected for funding<\/a> through a SPRITE \u2018sandpit&#8217;. It aims to bring together industry experts and academics involved in research, practice, and digital policy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Why is CyberSmart getting involved?&nbsp;<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many SMEs are struggling to protect their people and operations in our changing world. So we&#8217;ve chosen this project because of its relevance to our customers. We hope it&#8217;ll help us better understand new risks and develop the strategies to counter them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As our own Ben Koppelman, CyberSmart\u2019s Head of Research and Innovation put it:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is important research for CyberSmart to be involved with. We want to provide an evidence-based approach to understand what new security risks have emerged due to the dramatic shift to home working.&nbsp; And we want to explore the new measures taken to manage these risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll also be looking at how businesses can balance the security of the company with the private lives of employees. Ben added, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to know if employers are placing new security demands on their employees and if these demands create tensions with employees&#8217; privacy needs.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project group, made of academics from four different universities and two industry experts, will begin with a literature review. We&#8217;ll follow this up by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;gathering evidence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> directly from organisations and their employees. To gain a picture of the whole economy, we won&#8217;t just be focusing on SMEs. We&#8217;ll try to compare how home working has affected both large and small enterprises.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The academics will take the reins on research. However, we\u2019ll offer support as an industry partner, provide access to SMEs, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contribute to the risk analysis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking to the horizon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is part of our horizon scanning work. We\u2019ve been hard at work behind the scenes to better understand how COVID-19 is impacting digital transformation. In time, this research will inform our own innovation plans. But, more importantly, it&#8217;ll <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help us offer new security guidance to our customers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you looking to improve cybersecurity but not sure where to begin?
